Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum is Innovating Knee Surgery

The video “Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum on WPIX-11: The Alternatives to Knee Replacement Surgery” is a YouTube video published by DTCHealthcom on Jan 19, 2012. It was aired on WPIX-11 Morning News. In the video Dr. Kirschenbaum describes his alternative method to total knee replacement that he developed and is currently having success with patients in implementing. The concept is a partial knee replacement which involves replacing one part of the knee’s three parts. This is done by placing the organic material with metal on the inner part of the knee and a high-density medical grade plastic on the outer. This is done instead of replacing the whole knee for several reasons including the patient still retaining feeling inside of their knee.

This is because the majority of the knee including the ligaments are still their own organic material instead of being completely replaced with synthetic materials. The doctor does add a caveat which is that this surgery is not for everyone. This would include people suffering from severe arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Kirschenbaum estimates that this would mean 70% of patients would qualify then for this alternative and less invasive surgery. Currently living in White Plains, New York Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum is a member of the BronxCare Health System, and The SwiftPath Program, LLC, as well as Sprocket Health. He had his own surgery practice for six years as well as being the Co-Founder and Database Medical Consultant ofStarMed Online. He was also a founder and contributing author on  Medscape which was later acquired by WebMD.
